How to Take and Develop Your Own Senior Pictures

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • digital camera
  • some good locations
  • someone to help you
  • some creative ideas
Step1
Find someone to help you. Once you have someone to bounce ideas off of, the creative juices will start to flow. You will need someone to take your pictures also, and help you figure out how many prints and of what sizes you will need.
Step2
Location, location, location. Good pictures contain good environments and backgrounds. Don't just sit on your couch and expect to get professional-looking photographs. Many people opt for outdoor shots, so find some local areas that are nice (especially in autumn with the leaves changing) and use those as your photo shoot set. I used an old rusty swing set, a weeping willow tree, and an old abandoned fence post in the middle of a field that had flowers around it.
Step3
Wardrobe. Make sure that you are dressed well, with no writing on your shirt. Also, try to be tasteful. These photos will be in the hands of your grandparents, so be sure they would approve of your dress. Beyond that, be yourself. I was barefoot in my photos because it matches my personality; I like to be free, so bare feet seemed like the best option to me.
Step4
Poses. Try to have some variety in your posing. Don't just sit indian-style, or stand awkwardly with your hands at your sides. Be creative and try out a hundred different things if you have to. Most people have ideas of what they would like their pictures to look like in their heads, so go with that. Also, bounce ideas off of your helper; they have a different perspective than you do.
Step5
Props can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Essentially, you can have anything in your picture that illustrates your interests and hobbies. The key is doing it with style and taste. Typical props are letterman jackets, sporting equipment, or a cap and gown. Some teens even choose to be photographed with their pets. However, be sure that there are not too many props in the set, or your picture may look busy.
Step6
Take your photo card to your local Wal-Mart, CVS, or other store with a Kodak machine. You can do a lot with these machines that people don't realize. You can print wallets, 4x6 photos, 5x7, 8x10, and you can order 11x14 photos. You can enhance the pictures, or change them to black and white or sepia-toned. You can even add text; I put my name and year of graduation in the corner of my photo (in any color you can think of). The text can also be tilted diagonally they way it is on most professional photos.
Step7
Cut. Most people will not notice if your photo has points on the corners, but many senior pictures have the rounded corners. If you really would like this, simply use one of your friends' photos as a guide and trim the corners off. It is tedious, but easy, and can be done as a final touch.
